How to Store Your Blankets and Bedding

If you live in a country with seasons, you’re likely to find that you rotate which blankets and bedding you use at different times of the year. In the summer, you’ll want a cooler duvet or fewer blankets; then, in the winter, you’ll want to switch to something warmer to accommodate the drop in temperature. This comes with the question of how best to store blankets and bedding. We take a look at this question so you can keep your bedding in the best condition.

Optimal conditions

The optimal conditions for any blanket or bedding are a clean, dry environment. This will prevent mould from forming, which could ruin your items. If you have an airing cupboard in your home, this is often a perfect location for storing your bedding. You can neatly fold the items up and place them on a shelf. As long as that room isn’t prone to dampness, the bedding or blanket will be in the same condition when you come to use them again. To keep bedding in the best shape, inspect your airing cupboard before putting anything away. You may need to occasionally dust the shelves and vacuum the space to keep it in optimum condition.

Washing blankets and bedding

Before you put the bedding away into storage, it’s a good idea to wash it first. This will remove any bacteria buildup and stop spills from setting into the fabric. However, it’s essential to ensure the bedding or blanket is completely dry before putting it into storage. A damp item may not dry fully and could become mouldy and smelly over time. When you come to use the blanket again in a few months, you might want to give it another wash. Depending on how long it’s been in the cupboard, some items will be completely fine if the cupboard is clean and dust free.

Blanket box

If you don’t have cupboard space or your cupboard is full, you can use a blanket box for storage. These are boxes that are usually made from wood and have plenty of space for large items such as duvets. Blanket boxes often have a dual purpose, with many providing a place to sit as well as a storage area for bedding and blankets. If you’re using blanket boxes for storing bedding and duvets, make sure you place them in a room without dampness and avoid putting any other items in the box that could attract moisture or bacteria.

Hanging in the wardrobe

If you have the space, you can hang your bedding in the wardrobe on a bedding hanger. These are spiral-shaped to conserve space for such large items. The benefit of using a bedding hanger is that air can circulate to all areas of the fabric. They’re also really useful when you need to dry bedding outside or in the home. You can save space and dry things more quickly when air can get to all areas of the bedding.

Storage bags

If you don’t have a blanket box or space in your wardrobe or cupboard, you can choose to put your blankets and sheets into storage bags. There are many types of storage bags, but the best ones for bedding are made from cotton. Cotton bags will prevent dust and bugs from getting to your blankets and bedding, but they’re also breathable and allow moisture to escape. Try to place these bags in a room in your home where you’re unlikely to get damp; under the bed or at the bottom of your wardrobe is a common place to keep bedding and blankets in storage bags.

All these methods for storing your blankets and bedding will ensure your items are still in great condition when you come to use them again. The main point to remember when putting away any bedding is to ensure that the item is completely dry. Even a small amount of dampness within the fabric can cause mildew and mould to grow and could ruin your item. If you’re in doubt as to whether an item is completely dry, you should leave it to dry for a bit longer until you’re a hundred percent sure.
